When the interior carotid artery enters the canal in thepetrous portion of the temporal bone, it first ascends a brief distance, then curvesforwards and inwards, and once more ascends because it leaves the canal to enter the cavityof the cranium. On this canal, the artery lies at first anterior to the tympanum,from which it's separated by a skinny bony lamella, vyhich is cribriform in theyoung topic, and infrequently absorbed in previous age. It's separated from the bony wall A A 354 ARTERIES- of the carotid canal by a prolongation of dura mater, and is surrounded by fila-ments of tlie carotid plexus. Cavernous Portion.
